Four Seasons Tree Craft and Writing Activity

One of the best and most simple ways to teach the four seasons is to have kids observe the deciduous trees as they change throughout the year.

Today I’m sharing our four seasons tree craft and writing activity.

First, go outside

But before we get started, go outside. Whatever season you are in, have your kids take note of the deciduous trees in your area. Observe the leaves or lack thereof. I like to get my kids talking about the different colors on the trees and the animals they see and hear in the branches.

What does the Bible say about the changing seasons?

Another thing I like to do, is connecting God’s word to His world. There are a few things that the Bible teaches us about the seasons, here are a couple very basic concepts to talk about.

  1. The consistency of the earth’s cycles reflects God’s steady and unmovable character: “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Genesis 8:22
  2. Just as the earth moves in seasons and cycles, so does our lives. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Next, bring the learning inside.

  1. Either free-hand a bare tree and make four copies OR print off the *pre-made seasonal tree craft template.
  2. Walk through the different seasons asking questions, and discussing what they know about each one.
  3. Using non-toxic finger-paint, paint the trees to match the season.
  4. *Complete the poetry copy work for each season.

*Note: The tree craft template also includes a poem with seasonal vocal words for memorization, as well as, handwriting practice.

1. Winter

In what ways can we show a tree in wintertime? Using kid-friendly finger paint, try painting snowflakes falling all around the tree, or drawing birds and animals that might take shelter in the branches around this time of year.

2. Spring

How does a tree a tree look like in spring? Choose bright greens and pinks to paint new leaves, buds, and blossoms on the tree. Try adding a nest and possibly some baby birds as well.

3. Summer

How does a tree in summer look different than a tree in spring? Try painting a tree full of green leaves and possibly some fruit that grows in the summer like peaches or plums.

4. Autumn

Using fall colors like brown, green, yellow, orange, and red to paint the autumn season. How an autumn tree different than a winter tree?
