Picture Books about Snow

Today I’m sharing some picture books about snow. Snow is a real treat where we live.  It usually only snows a couple times a year and doesn’t stick around for very long.

So, when it does snow, the plans for the day are off and we declare a snow day. Snowmen, snow-angels, snowball fights, and homemade snow cones.

We stay outside till we are tired or until our fingertips feel like they might fall off, then we head inside for hot cocoa, cookies, and our favorite picture books.

  1. Big Snow by Johnathan Bean – This is a sweet snow story about a boy, while helping his mom clean the house, he is hoping for a big snow fall. He keeps looking out the window to check on the progress. Will they get a big snow?
  1. Sugar Snow by Laura Ingalls Wilder – This is a delightful picture book about snow, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s experience of making sugar snow. The illustration and simple story line are very captivating for younger kids!
  1.  Red Sled by Patricia Thomas – This is a story about a father and son who hike up a hill at nighttime and sled down. The text is very minimal while the illustrations tell of a lovely, starlight night full of snowy fun.
  1. It’s Snowing! by Gail Gibbons – This is a very informative picture book about snow. Learn about where snowflakes come from, how they are formed, and even about different types of snow storms.
  1. Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton – A heartwarming story about a hard working tractor who pushes a snowplow around and opens up the streets for the community. This book exemplifies hard working community leaders while teaching about snow fall and the issues that it can cause.
  1. Snowflakes by Patricia Maclachlan – This is a beautiful story about snowflakes falling and melting. (People have used this book to reference loss and grief for kids.)

  1. Winter Story by Jill Barklem – When the brambly hedge community wakes up to thick drifts of snow, they plan a snowflake ball that they will not soon forget. This picture book has very detailed, cozy illustrations and a very cute storyline. (Its a family favorite.)

  1. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats – Follow Peter as he puts on his snowsuit and goes outside to play in his first snowfall. This is a cute, little book book highlights the wonder that snow brings to children’s hearts.
