Short Winter Books for Bedtime Reading (Kids Ages 2–8)
Short winter books for bedtime reading are some of my favorite ways to share cozy moments with little ones. As a mom of older kids, we are moving past bedtime story routines (sadly), but I still adore picture books—and I love recommending the good ones to my friends and younger siblings for their kids!
While these winter stories for ages 3–10 are short, they are full of warmth, wholesome content, and have beautiful illustrations, making them ideal for snuggling up on chilly nights.
From stories about snow to hibernating winter animals, each pick is under 10 minutes to read—excellent for tired parents and cuddly kiddos.
Why Short Winter Books Are Perfect for Bedtime
Bedtime can feel extra magical—as well as exhausting. With that being said, save the longer stories for the daytime, and keep a collection of short books you can pullout to read at bedtime. It makes for a special moment, without feeling like it takes up too much time. Here’s a list of the benefits of choosing quick reads for your winter bedtime stories:
- They are quick to read (5–10 minutes)
- It offers a moment of calming, with slow-paced, cozy storytelling
- Gives daily bonding time with your little one
- Provides seasonal learning
- Creates a doable nightly routine

1. A Hat for Mrs. Goldman by Michelle Edwards
The kind Mrs. Goldman knits hats for people around town, and Sophie helps by making the pom-poms. However, when winter comes, Sophie realizes that Mrs. Goldman doesn’t have a hat for herself. To fix the problem, Sophie gets creative. I love that this book not only features items for winter but also kindness and determination — a slow, sweet short winter book for bedtime!
2. A Snowday for Amos McGee by Philip & Erin Stead
If you like A Sick Day for Amos McGee, you will love this one as well! When forecasted snow never comes, the kind zookeeper, Amos McGee, heads home. But surprise! Overnight, they get a blanket of snow, and his favorite animal friends make another trip to his house for some fun in the snow. So sweet and gentle–a lovely winter bedtime book that will have your kids drifting into blissful sleep!
3. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
This is one of the best classic children’s winter books! Peter puts on his snowsuit and steps outside to play in the snow. This book captures a child’s wonder and excitement at winter and the first snowfall of the year. Peter’s simple adventures—dragging a stick, making footprints, crunching through snow—It’s the kind of story that instantly slows down bedtime energy.
4. The Hat by Jan Brett
This charming little winter book was a delight! Hedgie the hedgehog accidentally gets one of Lisa’s wool socks (from the clothesline) stuck on his head—and becomes convinced it’s a stylish winter “hat.” As other animals tease him, Hedgie proudly shows off his new hat, turning embarrassment into confidence. So simple, yet my kids smiled and giggled throughout. The best part is, it was short and perfect for bedtime!
5. Winter on the Farm by Laura Ingalls Wilder
This cozy picture-book adaptation from the Little House series follows young Almanzo Wilder as he helps with winter chores on his family’s farm. I love that the kids get a peek into pioneer life—feeding the animals, warming up by the woodstove, and preparing for the cold season. The illustrations are peaceful, and the pace is calm and steady. (Our kids all enjoyed this one as a bedtime story.)
6. Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton
I’m a fan of Virginia Lee Burton, and this one is no exception! Shorter than it looks, with steady, rhythmic storytelling, this is the perfect little book for kids who love trucks and snowplows.
Watch Katy (the snowplow) do her job so the townspeople can do theirs.
7. Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner
This one is all about the illustrations for me. The quiet winter scenes make me sleepy. Ha! This gem gives kids a glimpse of what life is like for creatures over and under the snow–a short, delightful winter bedtime read!
8. Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Bear’s woodland friends gather in his cave to try to warm it up and wake him up, but he just keeps on snoring! Discover what happens when he finally wakes up. All the Bear books are delightful to read. This one is particularly warm and cozy, not to mention, short.
9. Big Snow by Johnathan Bean
This is a short n’ sweet bedtime story about a boy who is waiting for a ‘big snow.’ Inside, he is underfoot, turning everyday chores into imaginary blizzards. Outside, flakes are falling. Meanwhile, he falls asleep and enjoys a naptime adventure. When he wakes up, will he get his ‘big snow’?
10. The Mitten by Jan Brett
Another fabulous winter book by Jan Brett! Nicki drops his new white mitten in the snow, and it becomes a cozy hideaway for a variety of forest animals. With Brett’s beautifully detailed illustrations and playful, wintry atmosphere, this short story makes a lovely bedtime story! (We’ve read this one so many times that the book is quite worn!)
11. Snow Birds by Kirsten Hall
I love that this one feels rhythmic, and the illustrations are sweet and pretty. If you have kids who enjoy learning about birds, this one is a winner.
12. Wolf in the Snow by Matthew Cordell
A mostly wordless book—ideal for low-energy nights. While the words used are mostly onomatopoeia, the illustrations tell the story! A little girl and a wolf cub are lost in a storm, trying to find their ways back home.
13. A Thing Called Snow by Yuval Zommer
Fox and Hare were born in the Spring and haven’t ever seen snow. They are trying to figure out what it looks like. Then, the first flakes begin to fall…This book captures the magic of the first snowfall and the wonder for those who have never seen it before. (This book is large like Zommer’s other books–might feel a bit clunky at bedtime.)
14. Ten Ways to Hear Snow by Cathy Camper
A gentle, imaginative winter bedtime book that explores the many ways snow can be heard or experienced. With its lyrical text and playful use of onomatopoeia, it’s a short, calming read about a little girl and her grandmother that would make a nice cozy bedtime story.
15. Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett
Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett is a cozy winter bedtime read about a girl who discovers a magical box of yarn that never runs out. As she knits color and warmth into her cold, gray town, the story gently celebrates kindness, creativity, and quiet winter magic. With its calm tone and soft, snowy illustrations, it’s a perfect short book to snuggle up with on chilly nights.
16. Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak
Follow a brother and sister as they walk around their town, greeting the winter season. With the simplistic text, I would say this book is geared for young children (3-4yrs). The illustrations are beautiful, but the text was a bit underwhelming. (This was not our kids’ favorite, though it has a 5-star review on Amazon, and I know other people who really enjoy this one.)
17. Winter Sleep by Sean Taylor & Alex Morss
This charming little book follows a boy and his grandmother as they walk through a winter wonderland. As they explore, the grandma teaches her grandson about animals and hibernation. Nature-based, beautiful, and educational–a sweet bedtime book!
