Teaching Tips for Letter J

The letter J makes the /j/ sound as in joy, jump, and jingle. There are also other letters and letter combinations that make the /j/ sound. Because of this, there can be some confusion around the letter J. Examples:

  • /g/ as in: giant, genie
  • /dge/ as in: hedge, fudge
  • /ge/ as in: barge, large
  • /dg/ as in: badger
  • /gg/ as as: suggest

However, when you begin teaching the letter J to preschoolers, simply stick with words that feature the simple /j/ and use them over and over (eg. jam, jungle, juice etc.)

Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal. This confusion is very common as kids are learning their alphabet, but with a little bit of practice, it can easily be straightened out. The uppercase J can sometimes be confused with the uppercase L. And the lowercase j can sometimes be confused with lowercase i. (Try different strategies for learning letters and sounds to help with these common mixups.)
