I am kicking off this fall season with a delicious diy I’m calling, Carved Apple Mugs. These are almost too simple to blog about, but they a such a great treat, I couldn’t resist!
We made these for a quick afternoon snack the other day, and the kids loved them. Not only where they cute, and tasty, but they were very easy to make.
Note: I had my daughter, Jovie, help me with the video today. As we sequence the steps together, I hope you enjoy her sweet contribution as much as I did.
Invite your kids
Before you get started, let me encourage you to include your kids. Working in the kitchen with your kids, not only promotes togetherness, but teaches basic life skills.
What you need for Carved Apple Mugs
- Large apples (I used Fiji apples)
- Melon Baller
- Pairing knife
- whipped cream
- cinnamon sticks
How to Make Carved Apple Mugs
Wash your apples. Then, using your pairing knife, cut the top off of each apple.
Next, take your melon baller and scoop out the middle of the apple. Make sure you leave enough apple flesh so you don’t lose your structure and support.
Lastly, fill with your carved apple mug with apple cider, making sure you leave enough room for whipped cream to go on top.
And if you are really wanting to finish it off, sprinkle the whipped cream with cinnamon, and place a cinnamon stick in for garnish. (My kids used these as the straws.)
Other Filling Ideas for Carved Apples
The apple cider and whipped cream were a wonderful filling for this little project, but there are certainly other things you could try. Here are a few ideas…
- Apple pie bake (Using the middle portion you carved out)
- Homemade apple, vanilla, or caramel ice cream.
- Mixed Berries
- Cubed fruit
- Sugar roasted nuts
- Warm homemade applesauce
Other Treats to Pair This With Carved Apple Mugs
While this makes a great stand alone snack, I thought it might be fun to brainstorm some other treats that would complement this flavor, just in case we wanted to use these for a fall party or get-together.
- Spice cake
- Zucchini Bread
- Carrot cake
- Snickerdoodle cookies
- Banana bread
- Pumpkin pie
- homemade apple donuts
- Cinnamon/sugar chips
