How to Make a Washi Tape Corner Bookmark

Step 1: Cut Your Cardstock

Using a paper cutter, cut two 3 x 3-inch squares from white cardstock.

Step 2: Stack the Squares and Apply the Washi Tape

Place the two cardstock squares together, lining up all four edges.

Starting at the middle corner, apply strips of washi tape side by side until the square is completely covered. (I like starting in the middle because it give you a very straight line to follow when you cut your square in half.)

As you add each strip, wrap the tape around the edges (this forms the corner pocket once we cut it in half). The tape will wrap onto the back square, but don’t worry; we will clean up the back in the next step.

Step 3: Trim the Back

Once the front is done, flip the stacked squares over and apply your washi tape strips to the other side. This time, do NOT wrap around the edge. Instead, use a sharp pair of scissors to trim away the excess washi tape along the edges of the back square. This leaves the front with beautifully wrapped edges while giving the back a clean, crisp finish as well.

Step 4: Cut the Square in Half

Keeping the two squares together, cut them diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.

This creates two triangular pieces, each ready to become a corner bookmark.

Step 5: Add the Thumb Notch

Using a circle cutter or circle punch, cut a small half-circle notch on one side of the opening. This little detail makes it much easier to grip the bookmark and slide it onto the corner of a page.

Step 6: Press, trim, and then add these corner bookmarks to your favorite books!

Carefully get all the air bubbles out and smooth out the washi tape (You can use a credit card or burnishing tool). Trim any loose edges, then add these cute washi tape bookmarks to your favorite books, and enjoy!
