Tips for Teaching Letter S to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners

The letter S makes an /s/ sound as in: sincere, simple, and sweet. This is the S sound you will be teaching to your preschoolers and kindergarteners.

The letter S can also make a /z/ sound if it comes after a vowel, another S, or a voiced consonant as in: was, becomes, and clothes

When you begin teaching letter S to preschoolers or kindergarteners it’s important that you stick with the basic S sound (sun, sat, sing). Because introducing multiple sounds per letter will only cause confusion at this point.

Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal. This confusion is very common as kids are learning their alphabet, but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The letter S is typically confused with the letter Z.
