Ten of the Best Picture Book Treasuries for Kids

Looking for some great read-alouds?  Here are our top ten best picture book treasuries. We love books in our house and these are some of our family’s favorites.

Why Picture Book Treasuries are so Great

For me, having four or more books combined into one is not only a steal of a deal, but a great space-saver! I don’t know about you, but books can quickly take over a shelf…or a room. And when you are trying to keep your homeschool contained to a small space choosing collections over individual books really makes sense.

Besides, picture book sets make great Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and just because gifts. Trust me, I know. And once they are on your shelf they will be some of your family’s favorites and will more than likely, be enjoyed for years to come.

Are the Treasury Books in the Same Format as the Individual Ones?

Most of the time, yes. However, sometimes they leave out pictures or will condense the illustrations to fit more story on a page. A couple examples of this would be: The Big Book of Beatrix Potter Collection and the McCloskey Collection. If this is an issue for you, make sure you check the listing and make sure it is exactly what you are wanting before you make a purchase.

1. James Herriott’s Treasury for Children. This one has to be first on the list because it is probably one of our all time favorites. I remember when I first flipped through this book I thought the stories looked awfully long for little ones, but then we read one.  I was amazed at how engaging the stories and the pictures were. They were glued!

These are real life tales of James Herriott’s  encounters with different animals during his time of being a traveling veterinarian. The pages highlight the beauty of country living, the value of living things, funny animal quirks, and a sense of true compassion.

Note: He has a few other great books from his life as a vet in the English countryside. Some of these titles would be great for older readers: All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful

2. Beatrix Potter Treasury This is a collection of some of Beatrix Potter’s most popular stories. I found this book at a thrift store, and our kids love it. It contains the infamous Peter Rabbit along some of her other well-loved characters.

As a side note, Beatrix Potter is a fun author to explore with kids. Along with reading her books, you can watch her life story, learn how to paint with watercolors, or find numerous Peter Rabbit coloring sheet options.

3. Days on the Farm by Kim LewisThis delightful collection is probably a little lesser known but is no less a gem.  It is comparable to The James Herriot’s collection in that it is all about farm life and animals. If you like Border Collies and beautiful illustrations, snatch this book up, you won’t regret it.

4. The Complete Brambly Hedge Treasury. This quaint collection by Jill Barklem, is a must have. It contains eight of her best stories including the Four Seasons Books. These stories explore the natural world through the eyes of a curious community of mice and their adventures in Brambly Hedge.

The illustrations in these books are so detailed and cozy! I’ve seen my kids stare at each page for what seems like forever, just looking at all the different little features and characteristics that each pictures entails.

5. Little House Picture Book Treasury. This is such a great collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Each story highlights life on the farm, family bonds, hard work, ingenuity, and gratitude. In addition to great content, the stories are the perfect length and the illustrations are bright and engaging. I would definitely recommend this to add to your home library.

Furthermore, these picture books are a sampling for the Little House Chapter Book Series. (Once my daughter was old enough, she was quite interested in the chapter books, simply because she was familiar with the characters from these picture books.)

First of all, my toddlers and preschoolers loved reading these books about pretend play, being mommy’s helper, and God’s world. Secondly, the chubby-cheeked children in the illustrations are expressively beautifully and very relatable to little ones. A must have!
