If you grew up reading children’s books, there’s a good chance Eric Carle was part of your childhood. And if you have little ones of your own, you more than likely have a well-loved copy of The Very Busy Spider that you’ve been asked to read close to a million times.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Baby Bear Baby Bear, and The Very Busy Spider were read on repeat when our oldest daughter was a toddler. Since that time, we have read so many of Eric Carle’s books, and they have been enjoyed by all of our kids.

Known for his colorful collage-style illustrations and simple, memorable stories, Eric Carle created some of the most recognizable children’s books of the 20th and 21st centuries. His stories have introduced children to caterpillars, fireflies, ladybugs, crickets, seeds, chameleons, and so many other little pieces of the natural world in fun, engaging ways.

In this article, I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at Eric Carle, his life and work, and then share some of his best books. You’ll find 10 favorites with short summaries, followed by a categorized list of more Eric Carle titles to explore.

Who Is Eric Carle?

Eric Carle (1929-2021) was an American author and illustrator who produced more than 70 books during his career. (Many titles, I’m sure you already have in your home library.) His most famous book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, was published in 1969 and became an international children’s classic.

Eric Carle primarily created books for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and young elementary-aged children. His simple stories, repetition, and bright collage-style illustrations make his books especially appealing to young kids as well as parents who are beginning to teach their kids language, colors, counting, and the natural world.

Carle’s artwork is what sets his work apart from others and makes his books easily recognizable. He developed his signature collage technique by layering pieces of hand-painted paper to create bright, textured illustrations. The result is artwork that feels both simple and wonderfully detailed, giving little readers plenty to look at on every page.

Toward the end of his career, in 2002, Eric and his wife, Barbara, founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. A place for picture book enthusiasts, both adults and children alike, to appreciate the art of hundreds of illustrators. (I think I’ll be adding this place to my bucket list.)

1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is probably Eric Carle’s most well-known book. (And yes, even though most of my kids are now in middle school, it is still on our shelf!) This story follows a tiny caterpillar as he eats his way through the week before transforming into a beautiful butterfly. It is an absolutely clever storyline that teaches things like counting, types of food, and the days of the week.

2. The Very Busy Spider

This book was our first Eric Carle book and holds a special place in our library. As I mentioned earlier, I think we read this one to our daughter over a million times. It’s about a little spider works steadily to build her web while the animals around her try to get her attention. The story creatively introduces children to farm animals and the process of making a spider web.

3. The Tiny Seed

The Tiny Seed follows a small seed as it travels through the seasons and faces challenges along the way. It’s a beautiful introduction to nature, growth, and the life cycle of a plant. Very simple and very sweet!

4. The Very Lonely Firefly

A little firefly spends the evening searching for other fireflies, mistaking all sorts of glowing objects for his friends along the way. The bright nighttime illustrations make this one especially fun to read, and the story has a sweet message about friendship and finding where you belong.

5. The Very Quiet Cricket

In this story, a young cricket meets several insects and tries to communicate with them, but he can’t make a sound. Eventually, he finds his voice. It’s a gentle story about patience and growing up, with plenty of Carle’s colorful insect illustrations.

6. The Grouchy Ladybug

A grouchy ladybug spends the day picking fights with creatures bigger and bigger than himself. The funny story introduces children to different animals while also incorporating the concept of telling time, and learning good manners.

7. The Mixed-Up Chameleon

In this cute story, the chameleon wishes he could be more like the other animals around him, but soon learns that being himself is the best way to go. This colorful and funny story explores individuality and being happy with who you are.

8. From Head to Toe

If you’ve got a wiggle worm, they can get some energy out while you read to them! This interactive book encourages children to copy the movements of different animals, from turning their heads to stomping their feet. It’s a fun way to get little ones involved in the story rather than simply listening.

9. Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? (Written by Bill Martin Jr.)

This cute story follows Baby Bear as he makes his way home to his mother, encountering different North American animals along the way. The repetitive text is easy for little ones to follow and join in with; in fact, this was the first book my daughter memorized so she could ‘read’ it for herself.

10. The Greedy Python

This is a funny little cautionary tale about a python who just can’t seem to stop eating. He gobbles up one animal after another until, well… let’s just say his greed gets the better of him. (A fun pick for animal-loving kids who enjoy a story with a twist at the end.)
