Tips for Teaching Letter I to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners
There are three basic sounds of I. The short I sound /ih/ is used in words like: him, swim, and Tim. The long vowel sound /eye/ is used in words like: side, wide, hide. And the last sound, /ee/ as in the words: antique, magazine, and chic.
When introducing the letter I to preschoolers start with the short ‘I’ sound. Teaching more than one sound per letter can be very confusing as kids are trying to figure out the alphabet.
Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal. This confusion is very common, but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The uppercase I can sometimes be confused with the lowercase l. (Try different strategies for learning letters and sounds to help with these common mixups.)
