Here’s our list of animals that start with T. For our animal classification, we are adding to our daily animal research journal and are organizing lists of animals based on their starting letter of the alphabet, then generating a short list of picture books for extended learning.

Mammals That Start with T

Tahr: A tahr is a goat-like animal that lives in mountainous areas. It has strong legs and hooves that help it climb rocky slopes.
Takin: A takin is a large, sturdy animal related to goats and sheep. It has a thick coat and lives in mountainous parts of Asia.
Tamarin: A tamarin is a small monkey with a long tail. Tamarins live in forests in Central and South America.
Tapir: A tapir is a large mammal with a short, flexible nose that looks a little like a tiny trunk. Tapirs enjoy spending time in forests and near water.
Tarsier: A tarsier is a tiny primate with enormous eyes. These little animals are active at night and can leap between trees.
Tasmanian Devil: The Tasmanian devil is a small, stocky marsupial fromTasmania. It has a strong bite and is famous for its loud sounds.
Tasmanian Tiger: The Tasmanian tiger, also called the thylacine, was a striped animal that looked somewhat like a dog with stripes. It is considered extinct.
Tenrec: A tenrec is a small mammal found mainly in Madagascar and parts ofAfrica. Some tenrecs have spiny bodies that make them look a little like hedgehogs.
Three-banded Armadillo: A three-banded armadillo is a small mammal with a hard, protective shell. When frightened, it can curl its body into a ball.
Three-toed Sloth: A three-toed sloth is a slow-moving mammal that spends most of its time in trees. It has long claws that help it hang from branches.
Tibetan Antelope: The Tibetan antelope is a graceful animal that lives in the highlands of Asia. It has a thick coat that helps it survive in a cold environment.
Tibetan Fox: The Tibetan fox is a small fox with a thick coat and bushy tail. It lives in the high-altitude regions of Asia.
Tibetan Mastiff: The Tibetan mastiff is a large dog with a thick coat. It is traditionally associated with the Himalayan region.

Thorny Devil: The thorny devil is a small lizard covered in spikes. It lives in Australia and has a very unusual appearance.
Tortoise: A tortoise is a reptile with a hard shell that lives mainly on land. Tortoises have sturdy legs and often eat plants.
Tuatara: A tuatara is a reptile found only in New Zealand. It looks a little like a lizard but belongs to a different reptile group.
Timber Rattlesnake: The timber rattlesnake is a venomous snake with a rattle at the end of its tail. The rattle can make a buzzing sound when the snake feels threatened.
Turtle: A turtle is a reptile with a hard shell that protects its body. Turtles can live in oceans, freshwater, or on land, depending on the species.

Amphibians That Start with T

Tadpole: a tadpole is the early, aquatic stage of a frog or toad. It usually has a small, rounded body and a long tail for swimming.
Tiger Salamander: A tiger salamander is a large amphibian with dark skin and yellowish markings. It spends much of its life in damp places or underground.
Toad: A toad is an amphibian related to frogs. Toads usually have dry, bumpy-looking skin and spend much of their time on land.
Tomato Frog: The tomato frog is a brightly colored frog from Madagascar. Its red or orange color makes it look a little like a tomato.
Tree Frog: A tree frog is a frog that spends much of its time in trees and plants. Many tree frogs have sticky toe pads that help them climb.

Tawny Frogmouth: The tawny frogmouth is a bird from Australia with a wide mouth and large-looking eyes. Its brown and gray coloring helps it blend in with tree branches.
Teal: A teal is a small type of duck. Teal can be found around ponds, lakes, wetlands, and other watery habitats.
Tern: A tern is a slender bird with pointed wings that often lives near the ocean or other bodies of water. Many terns catch fish by diving into the water.
Thrush: A thrush is a type of songbird. Many thrushes are known for their beautiful songs.
Toucan: A toucan is a tropical bird famous for its large, colorful bill. Toucans live in forests and use their bills to help them reach food.
Trumpeter Swan: A trumpeter swan is a large white bird with a long neck. It gets its name from its deep, trumpet-like call.
