Vocabulary Activities for Objects that Start with J

Before you go, let’s take a minute to go over some fun and creative vocabulary activities and games you can do with this ‘objects that start with J’ list! 

  • Read books that feature items that start with letter J:  – One of the best ways of learning new words that start with a particular letter is to read books that feature objects that start with those letter. Go to your library or look through your bookshelves at home and see if you can find some books that feature J words. When you do, look for books that repeat one or two specific J words throughout the book. (e.g. Sheep in the Jeep by Nancy Shaw and Just in Case you Ever Wonder by Max Lucado.)
  • Play Pictionary – This game is like charades, but you draw the object instead of trying to act it out. So grab your friends or family and break into two teams. To start, one person will draw an object that begins with the letter J and the other team will try to guess. Be sure to use a timer for every round, taking turns so everyone gets a chance to draw. (The team with the most correct guesses wins.)
  • Write an acrostic poem using a J object – Pack an object that begins with the letter J. Next, write that word vertically on a sheet of paper. From there, write a sentence starting with each of those letters given (preferably related to the topic). This is a fabulous activity for kids who enjoy creative writing exercises.   • Make a snack using only foods that start with J – This is a really pleasurable and tasty way of learning new J words! Brainstorm a list of foods that start with J then see if you can make a snack using only those foods. What food combinations can you come up with? Jam and johnnycake? Jalapeños and jerky? It’s fun to imagine the possibilities!
