Cozy Fall Books for Kids: Autumn Picture Books for Learning

Cozy Fall books for kids are such a lovely way to slow down and enjoy the changing season together. As the leaves turn, there are so many learning opportunities that come through observing nature and reading books about autumn.

I’ve gathered these cozy fall picture books because they’re more than just pretty seasonal stories. They’re beautiful, well-written books with rich language, interesting ideas, and plenty to talk about—books to read slowly, savor together, and come back to again and again.

Some of these book suggestions are classics we’ve been reading year after year, and some are brand new to us that I am super excited to share. Our criteria: beautiful books for meaningful learning. Let’s jump into the list!

1. Sophia’s Squash by Pat Zeitlow Miller

This is such a delightful fall picture book! Sophie gets a squash from the farmers’ market, but instead of cooking it up, she names it Bernice. All is well until Bernice begins to rot…(A family favorite!)

2. County Fair by Laura Ingalls Wilder

This fall book is full of autumn vibes as Almonzo and his family go to the county fair. Almonzo’s prize pumpkin went the day before because it was too big to fit in the buggy. Follow Almonzo as he spends the day at the county fair, then see what the judges think of his prize pumpkin. (Note: all the books in the Little House Picture Book Series are fantastic.)

10. Books Up the Mountain by Caroline Star Rose

This is a new one to us! It’s a true story about a group of determined women who bring books and a love of reading to children living in the remote Appalachian Mountain Range during the Great Depression. It celebrates perseverance, community, and the simple joy of sharing a good book with others. I included this in the cozy fall books list because the women traversed through the steep mountains in the fall and winter seasons. The illustrations are nothing less than autumnal, warm, nostalgic, and cozy (all while teaching kids about this wonderful historical story)!

3. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson

This is a sweet story about a gentle fox who feels sorry for his favorite tree that is losing its leaves. But as the seasons change, he discovers that his favorite tree is sparkly with icicles and radiating with a new kind of beauty.

17. The Hundred-Year Barn By Patricia MacLachlan

I’ve read quite a few of Patricia MacLachlan’s books, but this one is new to me. Published in 2019, The Hundred-Year Barn is a quiet, beautiful story about a family farm and the old barn that has stood through generations of changing seasons. I liked the gentle language, lovely illustrations, and appreciation for home and family.

4. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pan

This book is an ode to autumn. Follow a young girl as she walks through nature and greets the different elements of fall. This is a very easy read, but a lovely little book that highlights the changes that autumn brings.

6. The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton

While this Caldecott winner isn’t technically a ‘fall book,’ it does feature each of the seasons (including fall) in a heartwarming story about a charming little house. (A family favorite!) Also, check out the other Books by Virginia Lee Burton post that we did. It’s an author spotlight that showcases all her works for kids!

5. The Busy Little Squirrel by Nancy Tafuri

It is getting colder, and Squirrel needs to finish gathering for the winter. Follow him around as he sees pumpkins, leaves, apples, and other signs of autumn. (This is a delightful little fall book for preschoolers.)

7. Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White

Rebecca grew up poor and eating pumpkins, she is old now and can’t even stand to look at them. But one day a pumpkin was dropped in her yard. She avoided it. So it sat, until the following year when, much to her surprise, that lone pumpkin produced a huge patch of pumpkins. What she does with those pumpkins is what makes this story great! (A family favorite!)

8. The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry

This is a sweet little fall picture book about a lonely scarecrow who nurtures and loves a baby crow. The baby crow grows up, flies away, and then comes back, bringing family with him. We found this to be a lovely fall story about kindness and friendship.

9. Sharing the Bread by Pat Zeitlow

While this book is Thanksgiving-themed, it is such a sweet reminder that sharing isn’t just about food—it’s about creating community. I love how it naturally shows kids that gratitude grows when we give and enjoy things together. It’s short and simple, with warm illustrations of family, baked bread, and steaming food.

11. Thankful by Eileen Spinelli

This is a delightful picture book about gratitude for preschool or kindergarten aged kids. With playful illustrations, this simple text exemplifies thankfulness for the little things. (There is a board book version of this book as well.)

12. Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard

This is a beautiful little picture book about a Native American girl and her wonderful culture. I’ve included it in this Fall picture book list because it highlights food, family, culture, and ultimately, gratitude.

13. Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet

Is the tale of a puppeteer who invented the first balloons for the iconic Macy’s Day Parade in New York City. (If you or your kids have grown up watching the Macy’s Day Parade in person or on TV, they will enjoy this book immensely.

14. Applesauce Day by Lisa J. Amstutz

The kids see the pot on the counter and know that it is Applesauce Making Day. The family loads up and heads to the apple orchard to pick apples, then makes their way home into the kitchen to prepare the applesauce. (We have our own applesauce-making day, so no wonder that we love this nostalgic-feeling fall book!)

15. Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall

The Ox-Cart Man is a sweet, beautifully illustrated story about a family who spends the year growing and making nearly everything they need before heading to market in the fall. It’s a lovely book for slowing down with your kids and talking about family, hard work, harvest, and the changing seasons.

16. Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson

This is a lighthearted and humorous tale about a family who travels out to Oregon (from Iowa) with a wagon of apple tree saplings. The journey comes with its many challenges, but the determined family works together to get Papa’s fruit trees safely to Oregon. (We giggled throughout this book and loved how the author told her version of the Oregon Trail story!)

18 Autumn Story by Jill Barklem

Another delightful story with the charming mice of Brambly Hedge! This time, they are in a rush to get the harvest in before the weather changes. (Our kids loved the storyline and the detailed, cozy illustrations of this book.)

19. Johnny Appleseed by Reeve Lindbergh

With warm colorful pictures and rhyming text this book tells the legend of Johnny Appleseed. The man who traveled throughout the country planting apple trees wherever he went.

20. Windows by Julia Denis

Do you ever like to take a walk on a chilly fall evening and look at all the warm light spilling from the windows? (I do!) This sweet, simple story follows a little boy and his dog as they enjoy an evening walk through the neighborhood. We enjoyed the beautiful illustrations that highlight the coziness we feel when we see light in windows.

21. Winter is Coming by Tony Johnston

This is a beautiful, poetic story about a young girl watching nature prepare for the arrival of winter. With gorgeous illustrations and rich, lyrical language, it’s a delightful book for helping children slow down, notice the signs of changing seasons, and appreciate the quiet beauty of fall.

22. Hopefully the Scarecrow by Michelle Houts

This is another new one to us, and it’s a sweet one! A scarecrow stands tall in the garden while a little girl brings her favorite books to read to him… simple and charming for fall!

23. The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night by Peter Spier

Another new one! We’ve known the silly song for years, and now it’s a picture book! The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night is the classic folk song brought into book form with detailed illustrations and a cozy autumn setting! If your kids know the song, they will love the book as they follow the clever fox on his nighttime adventures. (Note: Parents should know that the story includes hunting and the fox killing the geese; if this is not your thing, you may prefer to skip this one.)

24. Thanksgiving in the Woods by Phyllis Alsdurf

Thanksgiving in the Woods is a sweet, cozy story about a family gathering with friends for a special Thanksgiving celebration in the woods. I found this storyline a little too basic for me, but the bright, colorful illustrations of delicious food and a warm sense of gratitude and community keep me coming back to this one.

25. Hush Hush, Forest by Mary Casanova

Hush, Hush, Forest is a gentle, beautifully illustrated story that invites children to slow down and listen as the forest settles into the season of autumn. With its peaceful rhythm and lovely nature imagery, it’s a wonderful book for noticing the small changes in nature.

25. The Gravity Tree by Anna Crowley Redding

This is a fun non-fiction picture book that explores Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity based on his fabled apple tree experience. With simple explanations and engaging illustrations, I like how it introduces kids to Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, as well as to gravity. I feel like the apple tree theme fits perfectly with our fall-themed picture books!
