Picture Books About Weather

Looking for some picture books about weather? Today I’m sharing some of our favorite children’s books that teach about weather.

With our recent unit study on weather, we have enjoyed finding books that talk about the different elements of weather. From windy days and stormy weather, to down pours of rain and gently falling snowflakes, this has been such a fun topic to explore.

 

How Picture Books Can Help Teach Kids About Weather

Sometimes a visual picture or an captivating story is all it takes to get a child interested in a topic. We have found that reading about inspiring people, or discovering new information can really jumpstart the learning process. and picture books are a great place to start.

As our kids are playing outside they are noticing the changes of weather and are processing what they are seeing. By reading some picture books about weather, we can give our kids the information and language they need to articulate what they are learning and experiencing.

1. Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel- This is another great Frog and Toad adventure. As the seasons change, they discover the different weather that season brings.

2. The Wind Blew by Pat Hutchins- The colorful illustrations and sweet rhymes of this book playfully describe the effects of the wind. From umbrellas to balloons, kids will enjoy seeing all the things wind can do.

3. Feel the Wind by Arthur Dorros- This book is has some wonderful descriptive language when it comes to the wind. The author also does a great job of bringing in all the senses that we might feel when its windy outside.

4. Come on Rain by Karen Hesse- This is a sweet mother/daughter story about enjoying a summer rain on a hot sweltering day. It paints a great picture of a truly refreshing rain. 

5. Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco- If you’ve got a child who is afraid of thunder, this is a fabulous book. Grandma takes her granddaughter around the farm to hurry to collect the ingredients for thunder cake. Instead of fearing the thunder, grandma turns it into a cake-making adventure.

6. Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane by Joanna Cole- This is another fun adventure with Ms. Frizzles class! This time, they take a trip through the clouds and find themselves encountering a real life hurricane.

7. Berenstain Bears Count Their Blessings by Stan and Jan Berenstain- The cubs are fearful of the thunder and lightening until Papa and Mama teach them how to count the seconds to find out how close the storms is. They also learn to take a few moments to count their blessings as they wait out the storm. 

8. The Cloud Book by Tomie dePaola- From the author of Strega Nona, Tommie dePaola teaches kids about the common types of clouds as well as some of the legends behind them in a fun and memorable way.

9. Worm Weather by Jean Taft- This weather picture book is has very simple text and delightful illustrations. This pair together, helps to teach kids all about rainy weather and the worms that go along with it!

10. What Will the Weather Be? by Lynda DeWitt -This picture book about weather goes a little more in detail about the tools and terminology of weather. This is a great resource to teach the basics.

11. Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton – This is a cute little story about a snowplow and her special job. It teaches kids about snow and the tools it takes to manage it. 

12. Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Martin- This is picture book based off the real life of Wilson Bentley, who spent his life photographing and studying snowflakes.

13. Tornados by Gail Gibbons- With detailed pictures and plain text, this book describes how tornados work.

14. A Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman- This picture book about weather showcases a boy who imagines a rainbow. It a great conversation starter about how rainbows are formed. 

15. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats- This is a sweet little book about a boy’s snow day. It captures the childlike wonder that only comes with a winter snowfall.

16. Big Snow by Johnathan Bean – As the boy helps his mom clean the house, he is hoping for big snow. He keeps checking on the progress of the weather as the snow continues to fall around his house. Will he get big snow? Will he be able to play out in the snow?

16. A Year at Maple Hill Farm by Alice Provensen – This is a great picture book that goes through the months and seasons on a farm. Kids can see how the weather changes with each season, making it a great picture book about weather for kids.
