Another great way we can foster faith in our kids is to get them outside and observing God’s beautiful world. It doesn’t have to be complicated, today I’m sharing ten easy activities that teach kids about God through nature.

What Does Nature Teach us About God?

From the intricate pedals of a flower to the towering snow-capped mountains. From the star-filled galaxies to a tiny grain of sand. The chirp of a sparrow or a roar of a lion, to a thunder clap that shakes the earth; The universe reflects our creative God.

How Do you Explain God Through Nature to a Child

Explaining God through nature to kids is a great way to demonstrate who God is. In fact, nature is one of the best tools you can use to explain God to a child because it’s so tangible. Who else could make all these wonderful things that we can see and touch? Only our creative God!

Kids can see realize through their senses that nature holds more than they could ever know in a lifetime, it teaches them that God is limitless and yet detailed; expressive, caring, and real. Learning about God through nature means they can observe first hand that God not only cares for each and every creature but that He also cares for them.

10 Easy Activities That Teach Kids about God Through Nature

Seeing God through nature is just a matter of opening our eyes to the world around us. Getting our kids to see, is simply getting them outside. There are many lessons about God through nature, here are a few to get you started.

1. Go flower picking– take an afternoon and collect a bouquet of wildflowers. Bring them into your home and closely observe their beauty. Take this time to talk about how well God looks for each flower and how well He looks after you.

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Matthew 6:28 (NIV)

2. Observe the season– With every season comes change. Go for a walk, sit out in the backyard or just look at the window; Observe, list, and draw some of the changes that have recently taken place. What are the leaves on the trees doing? What about the birds and the bugs? Remind your kids that while the seasons change, God does not. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is reliable, constant, and trustworthy.

3. Watch a sunrise. Get up early and try to catch one of God’s amazing sunrises. Observe how he fills the sky with depth and color then let yourself stand in awe of His wonders.

The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. Psalm 65:8 (NIV)

4. Focus through the fog– Pause on a foggy morning to observe how hard it can be to see through fog. Try fixing your eyes on a particular object. Make the connection that walking through life can sometimes be challenging and we might not know what to do next, but all we need to focus on is Jesus and we will get through.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:12 (NIV)

5. Hunt for worms– Get a bucket and dig through the dirt. Find out about those pink worms that tunnel through the ground nourishing the soil, and aerating the dirt. Take this opportunity to talk about how we can cultivate the soil of our hearts through scripture reading, singing, and having a heart of gratitude.

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Col. 3:16 (NIV)

6. Do a Butterfly Kit– Purchase a butterfly kit and watch their life cycle unfold before your eyes. Talk about the transformation that God does in the caterpillar as well as the transformation He does in our lives.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

7. Start a rock collection– Collect any and all kinds of rocks. Observe their color, size, and weight. Tell your kids about the parable of the wise and foolish man and make the application that God is our rock-solid foundation that we should be building our lives upon.

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7:25 (NIV)

8. Research nocturnal animals- Go to the library and check out a whole bunch of books about nocturnal animals. Maybe even stay up late and see if you can observe some in action. Talk about how we sleep and night, and nocturnal animals sleep during the day, but God never sleeps. He is always awake and alert, watching over us, and ready to hear our prayers.

Indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalm 121:4 (NIV)

9. Plant a garden– Plant some of your favorite fruit, veggies, or flowers. Observe the seeds and get excited about what may come of if it. Talk about all the other kinds of seeds we can sow like love, kindness, or even unpleasant things like bitterness and jealousy. Teach the concept that we will reap whatever seeds we choose to sow.

10. Go bird watching- Be on the look out for birds in your backyard or at the park. Observe the ones that catch your eye, but don’t overlook the plain-looking little ones. God doesn’t. He sees each one, can cares for them just as He sees each one of us and loves us dearly.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:29-30
