Tips for Teaching Letter D to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners
The letter D makes the /d/ sound as in: dime, dollar, and dance (D pronunciation). This sound is articulated when a quick downward movement of the tip of the tongue releases a voiced puff of air. (This D sound is similar to the T sound but is voiced.)
Note: The /d/ sound can be combined with the /r/ sound to create the ‘dr’ letter blend for words like: dream, drop, and drip.
When you begin teaching letter D to preschoolers or kindergarteners practice saying words that start with the letter D out loud so they get used to the the sound that D makes.
Another activity you could do, is alternate the d and t sounds. This will help to build your child’s sound differentiation skills.
Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion. Letter confusion is very common but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The uppercase letter D can sometimes be confused with C, O, AND B. While the lowercase d is most commonly confused with b. (Try different strategies for learning letters and sounds to help with these common mixups.)
