Simple and Fun Syllable Activities for Kids
Learning how to break apart words into syllables is essential to phonological awareness and learning how to read! Here are some fun syllable activities you can do with your students.
1. Clap Syllables in Books
Grab some picture books and read with your kids. But while you read, play a syllable counting game! To play, instruct your child that whenever you stop, they have to tell you the number of syllables in that word.
2. Build Syllable Block Towers
For this syllable block tower game, you will need to get some building blocks. To play, give your kids a word and have them build a tower using the correct number of syllables that matches the word given. For example, if you give your child the word ‘sit-u-a-tion’ their syllable tower should be four blocks high.
3. Do a Syllable Picture Sort
On a chalkboard, whiteboard, or with post-it notes, make number categories 1-5. Next, give your kids a stack of images and have them say each word out loud, clap the syllables, then put the picture into the correct number category. For example, if your child pick ups a picture of an al-li-ga-tor, they should place it in the 4-syllable word category.
