Are you wondering the best way to begin teaching adverbs to your kids? Or how to explain them to younger kids? Here are a couple tips:

When first introducing adverbs to younger kids, you want to explain that an adverb tells us more about the verb. You will also want to point out that adverbs will answer the questions: where? when? how? how often? and how much? And will commonly end with ‘-ly’.

Then for older students, you will need to elaborate and begin to teach your kids that adverbs can not only modify verbs, but they can also modify another adverbs and adjectives as well. (Check out the examples of this below.)

  • Adverb describing a verb: Her jeans fit loosely .
  • Adverb describing another adverb: Her jeans fit very loosely.
  • Adverb describing a adjective: Her wore very loose jeans.

Simple and Fun Adverb Games for Students

Now, for some simple and fun activity adverbs for students. These activity ideas are great for homeschool or classroom use!

  • Do Some Storytelling: Do some storytelling out loud and see how many adverbs you can include in your story. Talk about the ways that adverbs add to the story to make it more descriptive and interesting.
  • Adverb Dance: Do you have kids who love to dance? If so, this next adverb activity is for you. To do this activity, do a short, 15-second dance moves. After each dance move, pause and give out the movement verb (we: wiggled, danced, hopped, jumped, etc) and then have everyone shout out an adverb that describes the movement they were doing (quickly, left, loudly, slowly, etc).
  • Do an Adverb Brainstorm: Have your student choose a verb verb then brainstorm how many adverbs they can come up with for that verb. For example, some adverbs that might describe the word “shone” include: brightly, or mysteriously.
  • Read picture books about adverbs: Reading picture books about adverbs is a simple, yet really effective way to learn about how adverbs function within a sentence. Once you think your students understand the use of adverbs, pull out your favorite picture books and see if they can identify some adverbs on their own.
