How to Make Honeycomb Hearts
I’ve got a paper honeycomb heart craft to share with you today. These 3-dimensional, textured hearts would be fun to make for occasions like Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, or simply to add your home décor.
We made these with Valentine’s Day in mind, but some of them would even make great Christmas ornaments as well. I hope you enjoy this honeycomb heart diy as much as we did making them.
Without further ado, I’m going to give you a step-by-step guide, on how to make these. Ready to get started? Let’s jump into making these honeycomb hearts!

Materials Needed to Make Honeycomb Hearts

- Colored paper (Colored copy paper, tissue paper or lightweight cardstock paper)
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Glue (I tried Tacky Glue and Fabric Tac Glue and they both worked good)
- Optional ornament option: wood beads and ribbon of choice
Tips Before You Begin
- The thicker the paper, the harder it will be for the glue to stick and stay. If you are a beginner, I recommend a thin paper like colored copypaper, tissue, or crepe paper.
- If you chose thicker paper or are having trouble getting the glued pieces to stay together, you can clip them in place using paper clips or sewing clips to allow them time to dry. (I had to do this step when I used a cardstock vs. a copy paper.)
- Allow time for glue to dry before you go onto the second gluing phase.

1. Cut Squares
Cut 18 3-inch squares. (You can make smaller or larger squares if you want to adjust the heart size. You can also adjust the amount of squares you want to make it look fuller or more open looking.) These numbers are simply a starting point for you.
Note: If you have a Cricut Maker, see below for instructions on how you can cut and score your hearts using your cutting machine! (Affiliate link)
2. Get your Fold Lines
Get your fold lines (these will be your guide lines for gluing here in a minute). Fold the corners together, open up the square then fold the other two corners together, then open up again and fold the square in half. (see the fold line guide picture below).
Note: the lines in the pictures are drawn for your reference. You don’t need to draw any lines on yours.

3. Make a Heart Template Then Cut out All the Hearts
Make your first heart, then use that as a template to cut out the other hearts. Be careful to keep your glue lines the same for each heart. (I made sure all my intersecting lines were the same.)

4. Begin Gluing Hearts Together
Next, we are going to start gluing all the 18 hearts together. To begin, we will connect them to each other, by gluing the top and bottom of one heart to the top and bottom of the next (see glue reference pic). Continue until all 18 hearts are glued together in this way.

5. Give a few minutes of dry time
Allow the first phase of gluing time to dry.
6. Glue again
This time, you are going to put a dot of glue in the middle section of each heart that hasn’t been glued together yet. Do this all the way around until you’ve completed the heart. (See picture for where to put the dot of glue.

6. Carefully Open Sections Until You have the Desired Look!
Carefully open the sections of the honeycomb heart until you get your desired look. And that’s it! You’ve made your first honeycomb heart.

Turn Your Honeycomb Heart into an Ornament
To turn your honeycomb heart into an ornament, simply thred a ribbon through a wood bead and tie a knot on the bottom to secure the ribbon. Next, hot glue the knot and bead to the top of the heart and let dry.
These turned out so cute! I love to hang these around the house for Valentine’s Day but, wouldn’t these make great Christmas tree ornaments as well?

Using a Cutting Machine to Score and Cut out the Hearts

If you have a Cricut Maker cutting machine, you can easily score and cut the hearts on your machine. This makes for perfectly cut and scored hearts. (Make sure you attach all the hearts together and then attach all the score lines together before you begin.)
