Tips for Teaching Letter P to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners

The Letter P makes the /p/ sound as in pie, people, and poetry. The /p/ sound is made in your mouth in the same way that the /b/ sound is made, the only difference being, /p/ sound is unvoiced (it’s just air).

P can also be combined with other consonants to create a different sound. These P consonant blends include: pl, pr, and ph. (The ‘Ph’ blend makes the /f/ sound as in: phone, photo, and graph.

Something to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal. This confusion is very common as kids are learning their alphabet, but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The lettercase p can sometimes be confused with the letters, q, b, d. (Try different strategies for learning letters and sounds to help with these common mixups.)
