When creating your Christmas stovetop potpourri, the goal is to combine ingredients that give off the cozy, festive scents of the season. And the best part is, you can experiment with what you have to create a blend that’s uniquely yours!

I like to start with my spices first, since they bring most of the aroma. Things like cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, cloves, nutmeg, and anise are usually a good place to start. Then, I like to add sweetness using dried apples, oranges, and cranberries. Then to finish it off, a little dried greenery like pine, fir, or rosemary.

How to Dry or Dehydrate Potpourri Ingredients

  1. Cut the fruit into thin slices and arrange on a single layer pan. (The smaller and thinner the pieces the quicker they will dry.
  2. Put into your dehydrator for the appropriate amount of time based on your machine OR place the fruit into your oven on the lowest setting (around 170 degrees) for approximately 3-6 hours. (Make sure everything is fully dehydrated to prevent molding.)

Note: If you don’t want to go through the dehydrating process, you can purchase dried fruit.

How to do Stovetop Christmas Potpourri

Stovetop potpourri is very simple! Put your ingredients into a small pot on the stove and add 2-3 cups of water and let simmer. The warm aroma will fill the room as the steam evaporates into the air. Just make sure you continue to add water to keep it going.

And yes, you can reuse it multiple times! It’s not as pretty after the first use, but I’m always amazed how fragrant these ingredients are even after multiple uses.
