Tips for Teaching Letter W to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners
The letter W makes the sound /w/ as in window, well, or windmill. The /w/ sound is created in the same way an /oo/ sound is made, but with the lips being closed a little tighter in a round.
As for spelling, the /w/ sound can be spelled with a W’ or with a ‘Wh‘ as in: what, when, and whether.
While teaching W to preschoolers or kindergarteners, use words spelled with the W alone versus a W letter combination like ‘wh’ or ‘wr’. (This will help isolate the letter and it’s sound for early recognition.)
Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal. This confusion is very common as kids are learning their alphabet, but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The letter W can sometimes be confused with the letter M or N. (Try different strategies for learning letters and sounds to help with these common mixups.)
